“History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future.”
― Robert Penn Warren
The Legacy Project will place a historically accurate face on the role African Americans have played throughout Houston’s history by highlighting people and events that have had profound impact on this city and state but have largely gone unnoticed. Unsung heroes and unheralded events dating from the 19th century will be exhumed, celebrated and shared. The legacy project will awaken the hopes and dreams of an increasingly marginalized people with proof of their relevance to Houston's survival. Those personally involved and their descendants who have retained their records to document their truths will illuminate this significant portion of American history.
The Legacy Project is a community–wide collaboration that will embrace diverse ideas and contributions from community organizations, schools and universities, historians, entrepreneurs, news papers, printed media and untitled citizens. The Legacy Project will help to revive the hope and pride of an increasingly marginalized populace by illustrating their relevance and importance to the survival of our city.
The Legacy Project: The History of African Americans in Houston
Mission and Work
The Legacy project’s mission is manifold. While its primary goal is to report on the rich history of African Americans in Houston, Texas, the project will inspire frank discussions between diverse communities and bridge cultural divides. It will also engage millions of Americans in working to ensure a more accurate and comprehensive perspective of history.
The Legacy project will achieve its mission by maintaining a web presence of pictorials, narratives and oral history of African Americans who have profoundly impacted this city. The project addresses the historic events, persons and lives objectively by presenting controversial and varied positions and points of view from persons who were personally involved or are descendants of those involved and who have records that document the history.
